104,000 Nebraskans live with diabetes

(11/29/09) By Rachel Lake - The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services is raising awareness about diabetes.

Officials estimate 104,000 adult Nebraskans live with this disease.

What is more staggering is they believe another 250,000 are undiagnosed.

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder of the pancreas. It can lead to heart disease, stroke and other medical complications.

The state's chief medical officer Dr. Joann Schaefer, said one in four Nebraskans is obese.

This is a big concern since obesity is often a precursor to diabetes.
