12-year-old leads free wheelchair mission
(6/30/2008) By Corinne Hautala - You do not meet many kids like the one you are about to. He is 12–years–old and forget about fancy basketball shoes and video games. He just wants to help others.
For $48.35 Joseph Prickett said you can transform a life. His mission is to spread that message through Nebraska.
"We have been working pretty hard. It is pretty hectic," said Joseph.
He is spearheading a national event in Hastings. It is the first of its kind In central Nebraska. It is called the Free Wheelchair Mission.
"I thought it would be fun to get something going on out there. I feel pretty good I was able to bring it here. I just really want to raise awareness," said Joseph.
Awareness about the millions of people living in 3rd world countries who cannot walk on their own.
Joseph's goal to raise enough money here in Nebraska to make 5500 wheelchairs for those people.
"I am very proud of him for his hefty goal," said dad Dan Prickett.
"It makes me feel content, to give them independence," said Joseph.
Erase any visions you have of a typical wheelchair. This one is unique.
"The first time I saw that wheelchair it was kind of surprising. It is a lawn chair and mountain bike wheels," said Joseph. "It is really sturdy. I rode around for an hour or two. It costs $48.35 to make. I know I can give someone independence, dignity and mobility."
Joseph's fundraiser will be in Hastings Sunday at Saint Mark's Episcopal Pro–Cathedral from noon to 4:00.
You cannot miss it. There will be a 51 foot semi at the event that reads Free Wheelchair Mission.
