Community remembers Clay County paster
(11/25/2009) By Anthony Pura - People of Clay County said their final goodbye to a long time community leader. Pastor John Green led service at Clay Center Christian Church for 22 years. He died last week in his home from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.
About 700 people attended his memorial service. Another 500 or so watched it through video satellite. His family said though his life was cut short he was able to touch the lives of so many people in the community.
Pastor John Green preached a life of faith in this church. Now an entire community faithfully came to celebrate his life.
At 49, his life ended suddenly. Leaving behind a son, daughter and wife with memories of things they will miss.
"A hug, just having someone there to talk to that is your best friend, your other half," said wife Cheryl Green.
"Everything, his smile, his laughs, his cooking, everything," daughter Charity Green said.
To everyone who knew him, everything he did, he did for others.
"He was always, always living like a servant, and putting himself second, very selfless and that is the legacy that I hope to continue, strive to be like that," said son Adam Green.
John Green was many things to many people. More than a pastor, he was a friend, a teacher, a leader.
"He was so involved with so many different areas of the community, and his mission was not just with the people within the church but people outside of the church," said interim pastor Anthony Godtel.
And as the church will miss John Green standing at the podium on Sunday's his wife said it is all the time lost, she often thinks about.
"I think about my daughter when she has a wedding and her dad is not there to walk her down the aisle and grand kids we hope to have one day and all other things like that that I cannot share with him, but it is okay. He is in a better place," said Cheryl.
Leaving behind a community that he enriched with this time, fortitude and faith.
John Green was buried at Nelson Cemetery Wednesday morning.
