Clay Center pastor found dead in home
(11/20/2009) By Adam Lefkoe - Pastor John Green of Clay Center died Thursday in his home. The Clay Center Sheriff's office believes Carbon Monoxide in Green's home led to his death.
The day after the town of Clay Center is still stunned.
When people in Clay Center came across tough times they went to Pastor John Green.
When they wanted to be entertained they watched John Green sing. Now, they can only look back and remember.
For 23 years, Pastor John Green led the Clay Center Christian Church.
"Oh he was a leader. There was not a doubt about that," said Allen Wilkins.
Even those that did not belong to his church turned to his guidance.
"When we have a tragedy in Clay Center John Green is the one that helps us through it," said Chris Eads.
Thursday evening John Green was found dead in his home. Authorities said carbon monoxide poisoning caused his death.
"It was just a shock...total shock," said Jim Eads.
The day after friends and followers are still coming to grasp that John Green is no longer there.
"I do not think you could find another person in our town that would affect us this way," Jim Eads said.
People speak of his kindness, his comforting demeanor, his wonderful singing voice.
"It is just like it was a gift from God," said Chris Eads.
Most of all, he was always there in times of need.
"He was like a miracle, you did not have to ask him for help. And if you did not go to his church he would be at your doorstep," Chris Eads said.
This Sunday John Green will not be at the podium, but he will undoubtedly be at the front of everyone's thoughts and prayers.
John's wife Cheryl was flown to a hospital in Omaha for treatment. People close to the family say she is recovering ahead of schedule and could get out as soon as Friday night or Saturday.
Anthony Geddle, the associate pastor at Clay Center Christian Church will be leading services on Sunday.
