Grand Island man shot at apartment complex

(11/16/2009) By Rachel Lake - A Grand Island man is recovering after someone shot him in the arm. 28–year–old Brandon Aguilar was shot at an apartment complex Monday night. The shooter is still on the loose.

Grand Island police said it is the second shooting in less than 2 weeks. In the past 3 months there have been 4. In one of them a man was killed.

This increase in crime has some in Grand Island concerned.

It was supposed to be a normal day at work. But as Crystal Eastwood pulled into Dairy Queen, she quickly realized something was wrong.

"There were cops everywhere. It was kind of chaotic and there were a bunch of cars driving down the street because obviously people wanted to know what happened," Eastwood said.

Eastwood would later learn a young man ran to Dairy Queen after being shot in the arm. A customer made the call to police.

"It is scary that it happened so close to work, but I hope that guy is okay," said Eastwood.

Police said in the last two years they have seen an increase in crime. In 2007, they handled 99 aggravated assault cases. The following year that number increased 145. So far this year, police have seen 76 cases.

"I know that there is more crime now than there was and yes it is dangerous to the public," said Officer Roger Philbeck.

And for these workers, that crime hit a little too close to home.

Grand Island police are reacting to crime increase over the past few years by adding to the force. 4 new officers are being hired to help with the rising case loads.

They should be fully trained and on the job by summer.
