Nebraska soldier at Ft Hood assures family he is safe

(11/05/2009) KHAS-TV - At least 70 soldiers from Nebraska are at Fort Hood. Some are members of the 313th Medical Company based in Lincoln. They were not in the building where the shooting happened.
The army said most were about 20 minutes away at another part of the base.

20 year old Trevor Melgaard is also at Fort Hood. He is not with the 313th Medical company, but with the Army's 1st Calvary Division. He is a graduate of Wood River High School.

News 5 was at Trevor's house Thursday night near Alda when he talked with his mom on the phone.

Trevor said he was in his barracks a ways away from where the shooting happened.

He learned about it some 10 minutes later.

He called his pregnant fiancé back here in Nebraska to tell her he is ok.

Trevor has been at Fort Hood since 2008. For part of that time he also served in Iraq.

He said he did not know anybody killed in Thursday's attack.
