Tenants forced to leave apartment building after fire
(11/03/2009) By Anthony Pura - A group of people living at a Hastings apartment complex are also looking for a new place to live after a fire. But that fire happened more than a month ago. Tenants had since been allowed to move back in. Now they are being forced out again - this time for good.
This is the second time in less than a month Virginia Condry is leaving her apartment here at the Spruce Estates.
"Worn out, scared, nervous," said Condry.
Virginia lives in the building with her daughters and granddaughters.
They were told along with other tenants they will have to be out by Monday.
"My husband is in bad health and I was supposed to have surgery Monday. I had to cancel because I have no place to go. I have to be bed ridden 30 days after," said Condry.
"A lot of us do not know what we are gonna do. I guess if we do not have anything after the 9th we are gonna be homeless," Tracy Winkler said.
Right now most of these walls are hollow, sheet rock and other insulation was removed after the fire. Fire officials said that makes this building dangerous to live in.
"If there was another fire in that area, it would allow the fire to run from the first floor straight to the roof space unimpeded," said Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Bob Sleight.
The Hastings Fire Department gave the original go ahead allowing tenants back in after the fire.
The State Fire Marshals office said it was just recently discovered how unsafe the building still is. It is not sitting well with tenants.
"We were wrong at this. They had a fire, they let us come back and they it was wiring and they closed this place down and we got nine days to be out of here and there is nothing," said Condry.
Nothing but each other all facing a deadline getting closer each day.
As you heard Viriginia Condry and her family are not sure what they are going to do. They have a limited income and are having a hard time finding an affordable apartment building that has handicap access and allows pets.
