Fire breaks out in Hastings home

(11/03/2009) KHAS-TV - It took just a matter of minutes for flames to rip through an entire house in Hastings. The Panganiban family was in the middle of remodeling. Now, they are left picking up the pieces.

It began in the basement of this home on south Kansas Avenue in Hastings. When firefighters arrived on scene Tuesday afternoon, the home was completely engulfed in flames.

"It started at the bottom or at the base of the fire, similat to when you light a camp fire, things burn up faster there was more structure above," said Hastings Fire Chief Kent Gilbert.

No one was home at the time.

Dawnell Panganiban's three children had just left the home when a neighbor reported smoke and flames coming from the basement.

"When firefighters arrived on scene, they could not enter the home, the fire spread too fast," said Gilbert.

Fire Chief Kent Gilbert said new building materials like certain glue and plastics are as flammable as diesel. A fire can grow to 30 times its size in a matter of seconds.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this point and the state fire marshall is investigating.

The Panganiban's two cats died in the fire.
Their dogs survived.
