Vote taken to officially merge Clay Center school

(11/02/2009) By Adam Lefkoe - By the fall of 2011, Clay Center High School will be a thing of the past. Monday night, school board members from Clay Center and Sandy Creek voted in favor of merging. Now both schools are planning for the future.

It is a decision most have been anticipating for quite some time.
Monday night school board members from Clay Center, Sandy Creek and Lawrence Nelson unanimously voted to move ahead with plans for a major merger.

Students from Clay Center High School will merge into Sandy Creek high school beginning in the 2011 and 2012 school year. Next year Clay Center will join the South Central Nebraska Unified System.
It will be comprised of 6 members from each school board. This year will help the schools in final preparations.

"This gives the boards of education that work together to make those educational things happen so that we enhance the education of kids. This is really about children," said Rex Schultze.

Clay Center Elementary School will remain open and running for the next 5 years. After that it too will merge into Sandy Creek elementary school.

The public was given the opportunity to speak. No one did.

After 130 years of history it seems as though the final chapter of Clay Center has been written.
