What's an Alpaca? Some found out at National Alpaca Farm Day

(9/26/09) By Brittany Rainey - Well if you were looking for something to do outdoors Saturday, you could have met an alpaca.

Saturday was the third annual National Alpaca Farm Day.

Visitors were invited to Alpaca farms across the country, including here in Grand Island to learn more about the animal.

They are now considered livestock, which means you can get tax benefits from owning them.

They also serve the practical purpose of providing fleece, which can be spun into yarn.

Alpaca owners hope by visiting the farms people learn about the benefits of owning alpacas.

“They are unique they're really a cool animal, but also the benefits of what their product is the benefit of what they can do for you for tax purposes, and if you want a small business, just the fun the joy of owning alpacas,” said Robin Buettenback, B4 Alpacas.

National Alpaca Farm Days takes place every year during the last weekend of September.
