Iams plant assesses tornado damage

(6/18/2009) By Denise Booker - The Iams food plant was also in the path of the storm that hit Aurora. News 5's Denise Booker talked with company officials Thursday. About 50 employees were at the plant when the storm hit.

Nobody was hurt. The company said they were prepared and knew what to do.

Wednesday night's twister left this warehouse in pretty bad shape.

"The roof has been pealed off in some spots and some walls," said Iams Manager Don Cornett.

Dozens of crews spent the day cleaning up the mess. Close 50 employees were here at the IAMS plant when the tornado hit.

"We practice for this all the time so folks inside know what to do and make sure they are safe," Cornett said.

Cornett said everyone made it to shelter safely. Thursday afternoon about 100 employees were back on the job to help get things back to normal.

"We have people that are out on site cleaning debris from torn damage in the warehouse, picking up fiber glass that came down from the ceiling. We had water that we are cleaning up off the floors," said Iams Plant Manager Kathy Brown.

Though the plant received minimal damage, officials said there was still some work to be done.

"When the power goes down we have to come back down, reclean. We are a food plant so we have to reclean all of our surfaces and get them ready to make a food product," Brown said.

"The areas that were hit by damage it will take longer for us to get those areas fixed but we will be able to isolate those areas and resume the plant in production," said Cornett.

Things were back up and running Thursday night at the plant. Again, no one was injured.
