Twitter sensation hits local farms

(5/13/2009) By Jeniffer Berry - It is a social networking site on the internet that is getting pretty popular. It is called Twitter. You use it to update people on what you are doing or to follow others. Celebrities use it, News 5 uses it, even the president.

But now, another group has found the benefits of tweeting - local farmers.

Meet Brandon Hunnicutt. Also known as Cornfedfarmer - well, on Twitter that is.

"You know, kind of stumbled across it; signed up, had not really done much with it," said Brandon.

Now more than a month after joining the social networking and blogging site this farmer is getting pretty good at expressing himself in 140 characters or less.

"Being able to communicate with people has become a great tool, not just fun, but a great tool to stay connected with the world around you," said Brandon.

Almost every day you will find an update from Cornfedfarmer as well as from his brother Zach who is also a farmer but known in the Twitter world as zjhunn.

"It is a quick, easy way to blast out an update to people," Zach said.

For these guys it is usually about the ag industry. Topics like weather...

"You know, it is raining, soil temperatures on such and such, I do not think we are planting this week," said Brandon.

And planting...

"We are planting 34,000 here in Hamilton," said Zach.

"Great day to plant, we have been spraying, hey we are finally done planting," Brandon said.

Zach and Brandon usually tweet or post using their Blackberries meaning they can do it right from the field on their equipment.
That is one of the biggest advantages.

"That is where I really see this could be beneficial. Instantly, I can say I am having a problem out in the field with a monitor or a certain brand of equipment. Anybody who you might be following might be able to get you an answer right back," said Brandon.

"I think it will enhance communications for rural areas quite a bit and start bridging some of the technology gaps that you might otherwise see," Zach said.

It is helping farmers around the world keep in touch with each other - all they have to do is tweet.

Right now, the Hunnicutts follow about 12 other farmers across the Midwest. They also follow News 5 and so can you.
