Travel to Mexico highly discouraged by CDC

(4/28/2009) By Denise Booker - The Swine Flu outbreak is causing serious concerns for people with travel plans to Mexico. The State Department is telling those with non–essential trips to avoid the country.
There is a travel alert in place, but as of right now no travel ban.

There is a growing concern among many people who have made travel plans months in advance.

Travel agents in the Tri–cities said there have not been any cancellations just yet.

Some travelers are waiting to see how things pan out.

Right now, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention is advising people to avoid traveling to Mexico.
But some travelers are still making plans to leave.

Those who choose to stay at home are being accommodated. Travel agents said airlines are working with people to reschedule or reroute their travel.

"The airlines and hotels are working with those clients so they are waiving any change fees with the client that may occur because of changes but if the client wants to make any changes then they can without any change fees at this time," AAA Travel Agent Patrick Crawford said.

No U.S. flights to Mexico have been cancelled due to swine flu concerns, but Holiday and Carnival Cruise lines Tuesday opted to stay out of Mexican ports.

The CDC said people just returning from Mexico should keep a close eye on their health.

If they do see any flu symptoms they should see their doctor immediately.
