Kidnapping charge dropped against Peterson

(11/03/2008) By James Wilcox - A charge that could have put a former Lexington teacher behind bars for life is dismissed. 26 year old Kelsey Peterson appeared in Dawson County Court Monday. She waived her right to a preliminary hearing. Her case was then bound over to District Court.

Before the hearing a state kidnapping charge against Peterson was dismissed by the county attorney. It carried a maximum penalty of life in prison.

"I suspect the way it will shake out is there will be some kind of plea bargain and my client will plead to one or more here in Dawson County and hopefully the judge here will give her concurrent time," said Peterson's attorney.

In September, Peterson was sentenced to 6 years in prison on a federal charge of traveling with a minor to have sex.

The Dawson County attorney said that is why she dismissed the state kidnapping charge.

Authorities said Peterson was having a sexual relationship with a student. The 2 ran off together and were later found in Mexico.
Peterson still faces state charges of sexual assault of a child, child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
