Church threatens local man with excommunication

(9/23/2008) By Jeniffer Berry - A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–Day Saints said he is outraged. He is upset by what he calls demands from the church to discriminate. Monday Andrew Callahan received a letter from a church leader asking him to attend a disciplinary hearing.

He said it is for going against the Church's teachings.

The outcome could mean excommunication from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, but Callahan said that will not stop his cause.

For more than 20 years Andrew Callahan has been a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints, but all that could change.

"I believe in standing up for what I believe in and I guess, unfortunately I am not supposed to stand up for what I believe in if I disagree with them and I do," said Callahan.

Callahan started a website and has written letters asking for other church members to support his belief that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints should not be involved in getting an anti–gay marriage amendment for California.

"We do not think it is right for them to get involved in this political matter, we do not believe it is right for them to tell us what position to take, and we do not think it is right for them to use our/their viewpoints to prescribe how other people marry," Callahan said.

Church leaders said that is not what they are trying to do at all.

"We do not take any political sides on any candidates or anything, but if they are value issues, we encourage our members to stand up and encourage those issues that are preached by Jesus Christ," said Hastings Ward Bishop Bryan Woodbury.

But Callahan said it was a moment of outspokenness on the matter that has gained the attention of his church leadership.

"Two weeks ago my bishop visited me and asked me to resign my membership which I do not think is appropriate and I do not feel compelled to do. When I refused to resign, he told me they would likely excommunicate me," Callahan said.

That is his thought now after receiving a letter last night saying that...

"I have participated in conduct unbecoming of a member of the church," said Callahan.

This week he will be attending a disciplinary council.

Church leaders said they cannot comment on any private information regarding members and disciplinary actions, but did want to say this:

"The church does not have anything against gays and lesbians. We are a church that loves all people just like Jesus Christ loves all people. We believe that a family is between a man and a woman and is ordained by god. Anything contrary to that is sin," said Woodbury.

Callahan's disciplinary hearing is this Friday. Church members again will not comment on the nature of his conduct that jas led to all this.

Go, Andrew! Stand up and fight for what's right!
Salt Lake City's Mormon Church should stay out of California's Constitution!

Interesting Article, I thought the Mormons claim they aren't a cult, they're just a church right? Then how/why would they throw out a 20 year long member just b/c he holds 1 political belief that isn't in alignment with them? It seems rather kooky and mind controlish of them to kick him out over this. It isn't as if the guy did anything bad, but apparently mormons aren't allowed to have a mind and thoughts of their own? Is this something the mormon church often does to it's members?

"The church does not have anything against gays and lesbians. We are a church that loves all people just like Jesus Christ loves all people. We believe that a family is between a man and a woman and is ordained by god. Anything contrary to that is sin," Woodbury said. So basically, "We love you, but you are a sinner and are going to hell if you don't repent." The church would never say that, but that is the subtext.

Do you really think they're going to change their policies? If you don't agree with the church, why don't you just resign? You may consider yourself mormon, but if you're that outspoken about the mormon church it's only a matter of time before you get out. You'll be much happier out of the church anyway.

one thing you said is true, he will be much happier out of the church. But this man is taking a brave stand. He is basically saying the church does not have any business in politics, or telling it's members how to vote - the church claims to not do that, but it is exactly what they are doing and asking their member to lobby for. This man will probably resign, but he is making the point he should not be forced to do so based on his political views. How about that 11th article of faith huh? Let him claim that right.

Re: Church threatens local man with excommunication
In Amos chapter, three verse seven "Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secrets unto his servants the prophets.” This is a principle, which comprises the Church's beliefs. A prophet speaks for God to lead and guide us. Thus, if the Church’s stance is for proposition 8 it has come from a prophet. Therefore, to oppose this belief or any other belief of the church would be to deny the principle of divine authority given by direct revelation. This is a huge principle; as I stated earlier, that, this is a key doctrine. Thus, to deny it would be to deny that basic doctrines of the Church.

Re: Church threatens local man with excommunication
This man is essentially saying "God and his Church have no right to teach me how to live". This is utter nonsense. Ever heard of the 10 commandments? God gives commandments. That's what he does. It is our choice whether we want to listen or not. But to yell back at God or his church that he doesn't have the right to give him commandments is moronic.

If you think that there are things that God, the creator of the universe, should stay out of, you are a moron. Everything is God's business; politics included.
If this man thinks he can change the Lord's or his churches stance on homosexuality by getting signatures, he is a moron. God is not a democracy.
If he disagrees with the churches teachings, he should leave the church.
And as for him not feeling it right for God and his church to tell him he should not vote for prop 8, I believe freedom of speech extends to God and his church.
Asking members of the church to vote in accordance with the commandments of God is no different than asking you to obey the commandments of God. Or should the church not tell you to obey the commandments either?

Re: Church threatens local man with excommunication
I find the comments from the church that we beleive marriage is between one man and one woman very strange. That is not true! If a man marries woman for time and all eternity(as we believe) and if she passes away, he can marry another woman and also be married to her for time and all eternity. Yes plural marriage has been suspended from a civil standpoint but it is still our doctrine and a few of our General Authorities are married to more than one women for time and all eternity. The churches involvement in prop 8 has placed a wedge between many families and this is ironic as families are so important in our faith. Many of us are shocked to see what is happening. Plus if one follows our doctrine we as a church are not to follow blindly and not to support laws that discriminate. How soon we forget what happened to us in Missouri and the "extermination order" that was issued against us. Let alone what happened to us in Utah. Laws of course, can be a good thing but can also discriminate and hurt a minority population especially when hiddng behind the face of the Savior

After reading this man's website, it is clear that he is completely outspoken against the church. He's playing the media for his own purpose.

Mormon or not, this dude looks like he's from a trailer park... I mean seriously. All the mormons I know, which are a lot, are all at least somewhat clean shaven. Doesn't this seem a little odd to anyone else?
