John Walsh
John Walsh leads the NEWS 5 Skywatch 5 weather team. He’s a Hastings native who graduated from Hastings College who has worked at KHAS-TV since 1986. John understands all aspects of broadcast journalism after having worked as a voiceover announcer, a news reporter for two years and a sports reporter for six years before taking over the weather department in 1997.
John has been honored with a Nebraska Associated Press Broadcasters Association award for Best Weathercast. He has also won A.P. awards for Best Sports Story, News Feature and Spot News. It’s the chance to impact lives through his work in weather, though, that has had a tremendous influence on him personally. John will never forget one letter from a viewer thanking NEWS 5 for our storm coverage. “According to the letter, our timely warnings enabled them to get their grandmother our of her trailer home just before it sustained appreciable storm damage,” John said.
Serving the public during severe weather situations is one of the things John enjoys most about his work at KHAS-TV. He says he also appreciates the challenge of understanding the processes that make up Nebraska’s weather. John also likes traveling across Nebraska in search of unique locations for his annual “Where in Central Nebraska is John Walsh?” series of stories each Spring. John will also serve as one of the hosts for the regional Children’s Miracle Network telethon broadcasts in June.
When John isn’t working on his forecasts, he’s often enjoying the outdoors. He loves skiing, backpacking, and climbing, along with his Green Bay Packers and all kinds of motor sports. John climbed a prominent 14,000-foot mountain in Colorado to propose to his wife Susan. Following their marriage, they toured Europe including a hiking trip in the San Juan Mountains.
John brings 15 years of weather forecasting experience and a passion for Nebraska’s weather to his Skywatch 5 forecasts every night. He brings a commitment and dedication to his work and to his viewers in Nebraska and Kansas, knowing that lives can depend on the weather information he delivers to them.
