Ginger ten Bensel
Ginger ten Bensel is a KHAS-TV news reporter who joined the NEWS 5 team in December of 2000. She is a Nebraska native whose career has taken her to Little Rock and Nashville before returning to the Cornhusker state. Ginger has hosted her own television and radio shows and also taught classes to college students.
Before her career in television news, Ginger performed as a singer. She has been the opening act for Clint Black, Chuck Berry, Vern Gosden, LeRoy Parnell, the Kinleys and Michael Peterson to name a few. Ginger has also performed twice for then-Governor and Mrs. Bill Clinton in Arkansas, and at the inauguration balls for Nebraska Governors Kay Orr and Mike Johanns. She has performed the national anthem at many sporting events, from the College World Series to Tri-City Storm hockey games. Ginger has won Nebraska’s Top Female Vocalist award, the Mid-America Country Music Festival Award and was the recipient of the National Country Music Festival Female Vocalist Award as well.
Ginger earned degrees in Speech and Organizational Communications with a Music minor from the University of Nebraska-Kearney. She also worked on a master’s program in Speech Communication.
Ginger made her first TV appearance as a guest singer at 6 years old. Several years later in central Arkansas, she hosted her own cable television program called “Ginger’s Show” which featured interviews with all the big stars that came to Little Rock. She also had her own cable show in Montgomery, Alabama where she interviewed various personalities. Several times she was selected as an on-air for special events on the Arkansas Educational Television Network, Alabama Public Television and in Nashville, TN.
Ginger’s work at KHAS-TV has earned her a Nebraska Associated Press Broadcasters Association award for agricultural reporting. Ginger says covering the kidnapping of a Kearney teenager is a story she will never forget. “It was the most shocking thing I can remember happening in central Nebraska. The whole week was overwhelming and we were so grateful she returned home alive,” Ginger said.
She has also interviewed some of country music’s greatest superstars, including Toby Keith, Keith Urban, LeAnn Womack and Brad Paisley to name a few. Ginger says she loves people, which is why she loves working as a broadcast news journalist. “I consider my job at KHAS-TV a wonderful opportunity to meet some of the most wonderful people in the country, from the people I interview to the people I work with everyday,” she said.
Ginger is a former Miss Rodeo Nebraska and still loves to ride horses. She is also a former Miss Kearney, Miss Western Nebraska and Miss Southwestern Nebraska. When she’s not working, she also enjoys singing, spending time with her family and friends, and playing the guitar, fiddle and the piano.
