A Frosty Morning…

Strong high pressure is resulting in a dry airmass, light winds and clear skies which translates to some areas of frost tonight over central and northern Nebraska. A Frost Advisory goes into effect from 4am to 9 am for areas along and north of Interstate 80. Grand Island, Kearney, Lexington and Ord are included…Hastings is not.
Temperatures will drop into the low and mid 30s with the prime areas for frost in valleys and low lying areas.
We are a long way from realizing any record lows tonight. For that to happen Kearney would have to drop to 19 degrees, Grand Island 23 and Hastings at 30. I think we’re safe.

If you’ve been monitoring the weather this afternoon you may have heard of all the reports of funnel clouds both in our area and farther west. So far there have been six seperate reports of ‘cold air’ funnel clouds; one near Bertrand; one near Indianola in Red Willow County in southwest Nebraska; and the others in Lincoln County in the Brady, Maxwell areas. A tornado warning was actually posted by the National Weather Service out of North Platte for the latter reports in Lincoln County (more…)

Pesky Pesky Low

The low pressure system that won’t go away.  That’s been the story of the week so far.  Currently it sits just to the southwest of McCook.  That’s the area that has been affected most by this system, but it has made for a problem when it comes to forecasting.  Here in the Tri Cities, we’ve been right on the eastern fringe of the clouds and rain.  So figuring out where the low is positioned is very important.  A matter of 50 miles one way or the other can determine if we have clouds and rain, or some sunshine.  Take today for instance.  Yesterday I was forecast Partly to Mostly Sunny skies for today.  Forecast models were bringing some dry air into this system.  This morning, I forecasted for more clouds and a better chance at rain.  So far this morning, lots of sun and no rain.  But those clouds and rain have been just to our west all morning.  So a wobbly low pressure system can make or break a forecast and sometimes you have to rely on a little luck.

Same Story…Different Day

On this the first full day of autumn it felt like……….well, autumn. Cool start to the day as the lows fell into the low 40s. You have to go all the way back to May 13th to find a lower minimum. The story hasn’t changed, as we rubber stamp another forecast similar to yesterdays and the day before. Mid level low pressure, cut off from the steering winds aloft, has nothing to do but sit and spin near us until something comes and gives it a swift kick out of here.
Keep the rain gear handy throught Friday. Tonight and most of Thursday the best chances of rain will remain in the southwest but we’ll keep at least a chance in the forecast as we remain on the eastern periphery of the rain threat. Fog is expected to reform late tonight but the low visibilities we experienced last night should not materialize.
Tomorrow, lobes of energy will continue to spin around the circulation as moisture is pulled north. The question will be whether the dynamics will phase with the moisture. Rain chances will diminish Thursday from west to east. Friday will be the day of more widespread rain as the system kicks out.

Autumnal Equinox

We’re in a transition period here in the Heartland of America.  This is typically the time of year when things change quickly when it comes to weather.  The leaves are changing, farmers are in the fields, small towns glow on Friday nights thanks to the latest gridiron matchups.  And in my opinion, it’s all great.

But there is one change that I don’t really appreciate.  And that is that our days are getting shorter.  Today marks the day on the calendar where we go from having more daylight than darkness and reverse it to more darkness than daylight.  Today is the first day of Fall.  Officially, the transition from summer to fall occurs at 4:18 pm CDT this afternoon.  At that moment, the sun will be positioned directly over the equator.  It only happens twice each year: today and the first day of spring.  For the next 3 months, each days amount of sunlight will become less and less until the first day of winter.  The other interesting things about today is that the equal time of day and night not only occurs here, but on every spot on the planet.

So depending on who you are, you may really love today or you may loathe it.  But either way we deal with it.  And spring will be here before we know it.
