Record Morning Rainfall

This morning brought some beneficial rains to the area, but in some part it was a little too much, too fast.  This morning after about 3AM, thunderstorms began rolling into the Hastings area.  By the time it was all said and done, 4.09″ of rain had fallen at the Hastings Municipal Airport.  This amount doubles the all-time daily rainfall for August 26th in Hastings.  The old daily record was set 1942
PREVIOUS DAILY RECORD WAS SET IN 1942 at 1.97″.  The heavy rainfall makes today one of the wettest on record in Hastings.  It’s one of the top ten wettest days in Hastings since records have been kept.  The all-time 24 hour record in Hastings is 6.09″ set on August 31st 1969.

As of writing this, there are still 12 more hours to pick up rain and get closer to that record.  There is a chance at showers during the afternoon and evening.  The likelihood that two more inches of rain will fall in Hastings in the next 12 hours is not very good.  Heavier rain could be seen in parts of Kansas, but may not make it this far north.  But even so, it has still been a record setting day for the Hastings area.

A Slow Hurricane Season, But It Only Takes One

That’s what people said back in 1992.  That year, there were no named tropical systems in the Atlantic until late August when Hurricane Andrew developed.  That cyclone went on to slam into South Florida as a category 5 Hurricane and was more costly than any hurricane in history up to that point.

This summer has looked very similar as conditions in the Atlantic have not been condusive to Hurricane development.  But one has been catching the eye of meteorologists since it came off of the west coast of Africa.  That cyclone quickly developed into what is now Hurricane Bill.  It is #2 of the three named storms so far this summer.  The other two are no longer threats.  Hurricane Bill has had sustained winds as high as 135 mph which puts it at a Category 4 hurricane.  It now sits at at Category 3 with winds of 120 mph.  It currently is situated north of the Carribean Islands and is moving northwest and away from them.  The good news is that it is not projected to strike American soil.  It is projected to pass just west of Bermuda.  It will still cause massive wave action along the east coast as well as along the coast of Bermuda.  Hurricane Watches still have been posted for the island of Bermuda.  Unfortunately around the time of Sunday evening/Monday morning projections take it to Nova Scotia, Canada.  That province could get slammed pretty hard by early next week.  If you are interested in more information on the tropical cyclone, check out www.weather.gov.
