Flurry Friday

Well as I woke up to the sight of more cars than usual on Highway 281 this morning (thank you Black Friday) it was nice to know that for once there was people up before I was.  You know my body never really gets used to this schedule so if you were yawning or feeling like going back to bed while waiting for the sales, I know how you feel.

Anyway an upper level system is pushing across Kansas and it’s leading to some early morning flurries and sprinkles across the state.  There is even a little light flurry activity around McCook and southwest Nebraska.  Expect some clouds today with a cool afternoon highs in the lower 40s.

We do have a couple Alberta clippers coming this weekend.  These are just week upper level storms that come in from Alberta and at times can produce a little light rain or snow.  There isn’t much moisture to work with but as they come through they will bring some clouds and maybe a few flurries/sprinkles.  Expect the first one later on tonight after midnight, the second one during the day Sunday.  Sunday is also looking pretty windy as well and both days should be cool…Saturday in the 40s, Sunday in the upper 30s.  It won’t be the nicest of weekends but it won’t also be the worst of weekends either.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Today is the day that we remember what we’re most thankful for.  Of course, we should do that everyday.  I want to start of by thanking God for my family and friends.  As some of you know, I am very close with my family, and now that I’m married, I am close with my wife’s family too.  Coming to KHAS helped to make things much easier being back in Nebraska near my family.  A year ago, I was spending Thanksgiving in South Dakota and it is so nice spending the holiday with my family this year.

Some of you may be thankful for the weather, which has been very nice recently.  It looks like things are going to change some over the next couple of days, but it doesn’t look like we’ll see any drastic changes.  The next few days should stay in the 40’s, then cooler on Sunday.  We could see some light rain or snow in northern Kansas tonight into Friday.  Some of that may creep into southern Nebraska.  Behind that, we’ll see dry weather on Saturday.  Then Sunday we could see a dusting of snow, especially for the eastern half of Nebraska.  Just in time for the end of November.

Again, I want to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.  And also to a big win tomorrow for the Huskers.

At least for the first three days of this week leading to Thanksgiving…we should have about as calm conditions you can expect around Nebraska.  We’ll have plenty of sunshine…winds should be fairly light…and we’ll have above normal temperatures.  So if you are planning on traveling, this will be a nice Thanksgiving for you.  Today we will have high temperatures around 50 and we should be in the 50s through Wednesday.

Last week of November

I can remember some very very cold Thanksgivings growing up.  One that I remember the most was I believe back in 1993.  I remember snow on the ground and a really cold football game between Oklahoma and Nebraska.  I think the highs were around 10 degrees.

That won’t be the case this week.  In fact, the majority of this week will be above normal with temperatures in the 40’s and 50’s.  Normally, we’re in the lower 40’s.  Now there is a big storm set to come in by Thanksgiving night.  But our forecast is beginning to change just a bit.  The latest models are bringing the storm system much further south.  So we may just barely get clipped or not get any precipitation at all.  The best chance would come during the day on Friday.  That’s good news for holiday travelers and for the NU vs. Colorado game.  Things could change as that time approaches, but as of now, the chances have lessened quite a bit.  But do look for a cooldown by the end of the week.

Weekend Outlook

If you were among those turning up the thermostat earlier this morning, no one is going to call you weak. It was legitimately cold this morning, the coldest of the autumn season so far. On November 17th we slipped into the upper teens for lows but this mornings temperatures were the coldest since last March 1st.
Folks living in the Tri-Cities and surrounding areas were greeted with temperatures of around 11 degrees this morning. In the northeast part of the state near Wayne, it dropped to 5 degrees for the state low.
The wonderful thing about this time of year? No one weather pattern lasts particular long, and warmer temperatures should begin to be realized late tonight with winds becoming more southwesterly. Mid and high level clouds will continue to stream out of the state allowing for a much healthier dose of sunshine with the weekend. Temperatures should push to near 50 or just above both Saturday and Sunday before another cold front slides through on Sunday. The cooler air behind that front won’t arrive until Sunday night and it should remain dry.

Well after a chilly start across much of the state with temperatures starting out in the lower teens we should see a rebound today.  With strong south winds and partly cloudy skies we’ll reach into the upper 30s.

We should have a weekend warm up though…with plenty of sun on Saturday both days should make it to near 50.

Early Thanksgiving Thoughts.

Never to early to plan for the the big Thanksgiving weekend. I’m seeing forecast models line up a little better in regard to a storm over the southwestern U.S. which could affect the trip home from grandmas Thanksgiving night.
A wave of energy will eject ahead of the main storm. During the day it should stay dry and the bulk of the precipitation should stay south into Kansas and OKlahoma, but there is at least a slight chance that we could see some spotty rain Thursday night into early Friday with a bit of a rain/snow mix early Friday morning. This is very preliminary, we’ll be talking about this more next week.

Cold Air Coming Back

Well you could say it hasn’t been really warm to begin with but actually we’ve been right where we should be this time of year temp wise…and today we will be a bit warmer.  It won’t last long, a fast moving surge of cold air is slated to come thru around noon today in the tri-cities.  When this happens, our winds will pick up out of the north and our temps will pretty much stall and then go back down.  Now depending on what time it comes through will determine how warm we will get.  Northern Nebraska will probably be in the upper 40s, southern Nebraska will make it into the lower to mid 50s, and northern Kansas will make it to around 60.  Tomorrow much colder, we are only going to make it into the 30s and with a small system coming through it might be enough to squeeze out a few flurries, but it certainly be more on the cloudy side.

Northwest Flow…Kind of A Nightmare

Well for my fellow blog readers I’m going to talk about something that drives me nuts forecasting.  It’s called northwest flow…and basically it means our weather patterns are coming from the northwest.  Why is this a tough one for forecasters?  For one we can get small disturbances from the mountains that don’t show up in forecasts and that can lead to clouds and flurries (sometimes called an Alberta Clipper in the winter)  but it can also throw a wrench into temperature forecasting because sometimes the clouds are thicker or not as thick as you expect…plus we are basically on the edge of the cold and warm air so we can also get some decent temperature swings…as we will see this week.  Now I’m thinking today since the flow is from the northwest we will be cool and cloudy but the clouds are starting to erode in the southwest and northeast part of the state.  If we get a little more sun than I think, we could near 50…but if it stays mainly cloudy we will be in the mid 40s.  We’ll see later today if my thinking is correct or if northwest flow tricks me again.

What a difference a day makes.  Today was a much nicer day than yesterday.  Unfortunately, it’ll be short lived.  As I stated in the previous post, temperatures will be much lower for Monday.  The good news is that you won’t have to wait long to have more temperatures like today.  The one change since yesterday’s forecast is that the cold front that will come through on Wednesday will be a little slower.  So we should see another nice day on Wednesday before another cooldown comes on Thursday.  And good news for farmers.  Should be dry for the next several days.
