Yeah, it’s that time of the year. Some areas saw cold enough temperatures last night, that there was a little patchy frost. I’d say that’s especially true out in Alliance where they dipped to 30 degrees. Broken Bow dropped to just above freezing at 33 degrees. So they may have seen some frost there as well. It wasn’t nearly as cold in the tri-cities, only dropping to around 40. Tonight shouldn’t be as cold, but with a backdoor cold front coming through tonight, we’ll see similarly cold temps for early Thursday morning.
But we are running into the first of October tomorrow, so this weather is pretty typical. Speaking of the 1st of October, it marks the one year anniversary of KHAS News Today. So tune in at 6AM for Chris, Katie, and Greg and check it out.

As we start off our work week a cold front came thru earlier this morning and has switched our winds to the north. It also sparked off some storms for areas north and east of Grand Island but the majority of the area came out dry. The cooler air will be coming in all day long and our afternoon highs will be a good 15 degrees cooler than yesterday as we’ll reach into the lower 70s. We will have plenty of sunshine though and it looks like we will have a ridge in the central plans all week long which will lead to sunshine pretty much until Sunday and high temps all week long will be in the mid 70s. Sunday looks like our next chance of rain at this point as cooler air will sweep thru…but stay tuned on that scenerio as that could change throughout the week.

Well we are in store for a nice weekend all across Nebraska. Today we continue the sunshine and the breezy south winds. Highs will reach into the upper 80s which is a good 10 degrees above where we should be this time of year. A cool front will come thru tomorrow morning but Saturday is still looking warm. Highs should reach into the lower 80s with sunshine. The Husker game should go off without any trouble from the weather as gametime temps in Lincoln will be in the upper 70s and probably in the lower 70s by the time the game comes to an end. Sunday now looks dry across much of the state with the exception of northeast Nebraska. So we’ll go with mostly sunny to at times partly cloudy skies and highs reaching into the lower 80s again. It’s going to be a great weekend to be outside so take advantage of it.

I was reading the post on the National Weather Service web site regarding Larry Gillette, the most recent Holm Award winner from Burr Oak, Kansas. For background, the John Campanius Holm Award is the second most prestigious award offered by the U.S. Commerce Department to a cooperative weather observer; those tireless citizens who unfailingly on a daily basis collect and report temperatures and precipitation to the local National Weather Service office for purposes of real time weather observations in addition to data collection for climotology and research purposes. Well as I was driving into work this morning I had a hard time seeing thanks to some dense fog which developed. As of 7 am when I looked on the skycam we still have dense fog. Lots of lower level moisture is still around and we will be adding to it tomorrow as warmer air will be coming up later tonight and we will see sunshine and windy conditions tomorrow. Today we may have a storm or two form along the stateline but otherwise a nice day with temps in the upper 70s, tomorrow mid 80s and the warm trend will continue into this weekend. Though next week we do see the indication of cooler more fall-like air coming so we’ll have to keep watch on that.

Overnight thunderstorms have continually developed after 10:30 pm in Thayer County spreading east into Jefferson County and is now back building farther west along highway 136 from Superior to Hebron. The activity is focused along a stalled front and has been producing small hail and heavy downbursts of rain along with some gusty winds. A low level jet will keep the focus to the southeast of the Tri-Cities during the night.
I can’t totally rule out the possibility of an isolated storm turning severe. As I watch storms train over Nuckolls and Thayer Counties over the same areas some localize flooding is possible in those counties along the stateline.
Tomorrow this front will lift to the north as a warm front with additional scattered to isolated T’storms possible.

I hope everyone had time to grieve the loss of summer as we transitioned to autumn at 10:44 this morning. The autumnal equinox blew in on strong southerly winds which will continue through the overnight though dropping below adivsory criteria.
As upper level energy pushes a cold front through, the clouds will thicken up overnight and some scattered rumbles of thunder may be heard by those night owls as they develop in the Tri-Cities after the 3 am hour and linger through the commute to work in the morning. The front itself early tomorrow will still be to our west but will lumber through, taking the clouds and rain eastward by the afternoon.
Outside of another slight chance for rain Wednesday night, beautiful fall weather with temperatures in the 80s continue through the weekend. Enjoy.

Well our first day of autumn is going to seem more like the first day of spring. We are going to have strong gusty winds this afternoon in the order of 30 mph or more out of the south. There is a wind advisory for the tri-cities and surrounding areas that starts at 1 and goes until 7. This means we are slated to have sustained winds over 30 mph with gusts upwards of 40. Also we had some isolated severe storms last night which are continuing as run of the mill storms this morning in central and northeast Nebraska. Those should be ending later on in the morning but we may see more storm chances come thru tomorrow. Rest of the week is going to be warm with temps in the 80s and another slight chance of rain Wednesday night. (more…)

You know, fall is probably one of my favorite seasons. I guess I could probably debate that with spring. I mean what is better, coming out of that dark and cold winter days or leaving behind the sweltering summer days. Fall is probably my favorite time of year because you have football season thrown in there as well.
Well, fall is only 4 days away. The first day of fall is also known as the autumnal equinox. This is where the sun is positioned directly over the equator. It is one of two times per year when every point on earth has exactly 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night. Even at the poles. From here on, the sun angle will continue to move south until late December. This means our days will get shorter and shorter until the first day of winter.
One thing that you may have noticed for the last few weeks is how much brighter the sun seems when it rises and sets this time of year. This can make driving particularly tough on east/west roads. Monday, the sun will rise and set exactly east and west in the atmosphere. This probably means you’ll need the sun glasses if you’re driving between 6:30 and 7:30 at night or 7:30 and 8:30 in the morning. But maybe we will be seeing a few more clouds in our forecast come next week. Just keep it tuned to news 5 for your latest forecast.

Well our prolonged pattern of nice weather will probably be coming somewhat to an end next week. Beforehand though we should still see plenty of sunshine at least thru Saturday. The winds will be stronger today out of the south around 10-20 mph and we should once again make it to around 80. Friday will be sunny as will Saturday. By Sunday though we will have an upper level trough and that means cooler air and stormy weather next week. Personally I would like that because I like change in weather. From 4 am - noon I don’t prefer saying the same thing over and over but from noon onward I do like going out in sunny, warm weather. Keep it tuned to see if our storm chances increase next week.
