Weekend winds

It will be an interesting weekend shaping up weatherwise across the Heartland. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will rumble through late tonight. Then a much advertised upper level low will make its arrival Saturday night into early Sunday. That is when we’ll see the most widespread rainfall. The rain will linger into part of the day on Sunday, as temperatures drop about 15 degrees from Saturday’s high of 85, thanks to a fairly strong cold front sweeping across the area.
Saturday’s big weather story however will be the winds, ahead of that front. Wind advisories will go into effect from 10am until 10pm for wind speeds between 25 and 35 mph with higher gusts in the afternoon. If that won’t blow the stink off, nothing will.
Just leave the toupee on the bedpost and make the most of it. Enjoy the weekend.

Going to be Windy

Today we are going to see increasing clouds and the winds are going to pick up quite a bit. The winds should be anywhere from 15-25 mph out of the south and that will warm us up into the lower 80s. The wind could play havoc with the football games tonight and the Husker game tomorrow as the winds will be even stronger tomorrow. We will also have a small chance of rain during the day tomorrow but better chances of storms tomorrow night into Sunday morning. Then a cool down will be coming Sunday as we’ll make it into the lower 70s with mostly cloudy skies.

Scrumptious Weather, Thursday

The current forecast continues to remain on track. I’m looking for a beautiful day today with northwest winds, sunshine and high 70s. Don’t you love autumn! Friday is even better though it will turn windy. Those south winds will help propel temperatures into the lower 80s.
The weekend forecast is still a little precarious. An upper level low and its attendant cold front will drift through the region but the timing and location still hasn’t been completely deciphered by the forecast models as they remain divergent as to solutions. Right now, a slight chance for rain Friday late night with increased chances Saturday night.
Certainly Sunday through the middle of next week will be cooler but seasonal. We’ll keep a close eye on how this resolves itself over the next couple of days.
For now, enjoy your Thursday.

To the ‘Wild Weather Watchers’ of Tehachapi

If you know me, I’m not one to brag about accomplishments but today I do want to share a particular honor that I’m very proud of. The first grade class at Golden Hills Elementary School in Tehachapi, California was on a quest to comb the entire United States of America in search of their own personal meteorologist from whom they may consult and ask questions about the weather in their own community and beyond. Doing A Little Storm Chasing

For folks in southern Adams, northern Webster, and southern Clay counties an impressive storm system went through and produced quite a bit of wind, rain, and kicked up a few gustnadoes (read the previous post about those). My roomate and I decided to go chasing the storms. The jist of the chase consisted of us going through a whole bunch of rain, a little hail, and 50-60 mph winds from Fairfield to the Fillmore County line. We were on highway 74 trying to keep up with the storm but the winds were whipping the car around and the trees were leaning pretty good. We did get to see some rotation but nothing of value. However we did get to see some photos of the gustnadoes near Ayr and Blue Hill. Another chase partner met up with us and showed us the picture of the gustnado near Blue hill (the one that prompted the tornado warning). We ended the night with a good dinner at the Big Daddy’s Cafe in Clay Center. It was nice to be back out in the elements to witness just what strong storms can do. (more…)

Hello everyone.

Today we are going to see some slight changes in our weather. We are going to have cooler air come through the state and switch our breezy southerly winds to a more northerly direction. The cool front should come through here around noon today. As a result our highs will likely occur around 1 or 2 and then gradually cool down as the winds bring in the Canadian Air. Highs today will be in the mid 80s before the front and then falling into the low 50s towards tomorrow morning. Saturday for the Husker game pretty nice weather. Sunshine, light winds, and temps getting into the low 80s. This upcoming Monday will bring much cooler air and a good chance of rain so stay tuned to blog updates this weekend.

A Bit of a Dry Run

The past two days have brought quite a bit of rain to some locations in Southern Nebraska and Northern Kansas. Common rainfall totals of an inch or more can be found south of I-80 from the past two days of rain. Today most of us should be dry however with warmer air coming in from the south this could form a few storms tonight mainly south and west of Kearney. There is enough instability to be found that some of these storms could briefly be severe. Most of the area should be dry today. Temps will be in the mid to upper 70s. Then we’ll go on a dry streak that should last through Sunday afternoon. Temps will gradually increase Thursday thru Sunday where we will be in the 80s. Next chance of rain and a cool down will come early next week.

Overnight update

The main band of rain has pushed east of the Tri-Cities, with the center of the band crossing the highway 81 corridor. Rainfall rates in most cases remain a tenth to a quarter of an inch per hour. A few light sprinkles linger in the area, and we will see a break for awhile tonight, however periods of rain will again reemerge later .
Clouds with periods of rain again expected Tuesday, as the upper level trough and a surface cold front cross the area. Clearing skies expected by tomorrow evening.
Greg, will have the latest details during the Today Show and News 5 Midday.
